New York Times!

Posted on Jun 6th, 2009 at 7:49 am by Bengt

We’re just three days away from kicking off the cross-country drive and the build up is happening fast. The Maxwell arrived to Brooklyn at 9:30 p.m. Friday evening with Tim and Barb Simonsma and the beautifully decorated trailer from the Renze Display group in Omaha, NE! Pictures to come later on the website! It’s pretty stunning.

Emily, Rich and Margaret (Sister, Dad and Mom and baby Kaisa) arrived late from Seattle into Newark Airport. We all headed at the various NY family apartments around 3 a.m. for a quick snooze.

Now, Saturday morning we’re up early…to find the NY Times “Wheels” blog posted all about us!

What an excellent way to start kicking off this grand adventure!

Here are a few more articles we’ve found - The Smithsonian.com article is especially good.

  3. I live in the city and I would love to join you at the departure or to connect with you prior to that date.

It so happens that my grandparents, Richard and Lucy Hurd, were the first family to cross the USA by car. They drove a Packard from Los Angeles to New York City in May, 1910, 1 year later than your “single woman” trip. They brought along their 10 year old daughter, my mother, Mary Hurd Lawrence who was 10 years old at the time and her youmger sister, Ellie who was 7. I have a series of photographs (about 50 pictures) and notes written by my grandmother describing the trip from across the deserts, staying as close as they could to the Union Pacific railroad tracks. It was tough work at times and they were helped by a chauffeur, and apparently good weather. Some of the pictures are great.

If you are interested I could bring the notes and photos with me. When exactly are you leaving?

  5. I work in Cedar Rapids, IA, and one of my fellow employees introduced me to the Lincoln Highway Association. That route somewhat parallels much of the routed you are taking, and you will be passing through Cedar Rapids, IA where the old Lincoln Highway (first coast to coast highway) existed. There are still some memorial markers posted along original parts of that route near and in Cedar Rapids. If you did not already know about it, I thought you might find some interesting parallels between the two routes. Have a safe trip, and feel free to look me up when you are here if you need help with anything.

  9. Well, Emily wanted input from various members of the crew so here it is. We all met for the first time this evening and went over our special assignments and set the agenda for the first day. We will gather at 1930 Broadway about 7:30 tomorrow morning for our 9:30 departure. Special guests for tomorrow are members of the Ramsey family. I felt we had an instant bonding and will be a happy crew supporting Emily. I am comfortable with my assignment as the storyteller for Alice and helping with anything else as needed. Kay and I bumbled our way back from Brookyn on the subway and chatted so much we nearly missed our first stop. I hope Rich or someone will list the crew and assignments here so you readers can feel a part of the adventure by knowing the players.
